Expert System

An Expert System is a type of artificial intelligence with a limited scope. Sometimes called a knowledge based system, it is an AI expert in a single discipline. It contains full subject knowledge and analytic abilities to assist diagnosis of a problem or situation within its sphere of knowledge.

Larger expert systems are frequently neural net based so they can learn from previous sessions. Smaller systems are tree based, with simple 'if this symptom is present, these can also be present' structure. These smaller systems have no real intelligence of their own - basically a series of 'if this, then this might be' stacked up one upon the other - however they give the impression of intelligence to the end user.

Expert System Matches Human Eye in Identifying Artwork
The highly subjective task of critically evaluating artwork for composition, and authorship has always been beyond artificial intelligence systems. It has been believed by some, that it always would be. Times do change indeed.

Why Plan?
Most NPC behaviour takes place as a set of preprogrammed directives - the expert system approach. What if, instead of doing it this highly efficient, if a bit limited way, and took a new approach - giving the characters a highly flexible "plan of action" that could change at any moment...

This book is an animation expert's attempt to ?dump his kit? as the author puts it, and share with others the fundamentals of animation that are not generally taught outside of industry practice, and always were taught behind closed doors.

3D printing failures shared online
Seven catastropic failures are visually depicted by this BBC article. Each failure accompanied by blurb explaining what it was supposed to be, as well as where, and more imprtantly why it went wrong. It serves as a good reminder of how young this technology still is, and how frustrating it can be, for even expert users to produce 3D printed objects successfully with the way things currently stand.

Cells with double vision
Unlike in the peripheral nervous system, where cells are often unable to distinguish which branching pathway an electrical system is travelling from, the central nervous system makes use of sophisticated internal networks not too dissimilar from an IP record, to differentiate between nervous pathways.

This book is very much a holistic first-timer?s guide to creating a hideously complex system ? a full virtual reality. The book describes a VR system as ?a system that provides a synthetic experience for its user(s)?, a definition which could not possibly be any broader.

Podcast: 3 Ways The Brain Creates Meaning
This podcast comes from TED 2009, where Tom Wujec - an information expert at Autodesk - gives a quick talk about ways the brain creates meaning out of the environment it is perceiving. It should be noted going in, that this person is not a neuroscientist or neuroengineer.

Artificial General Intelligence or AGI is the holy grail of AI research. Instead of expert systems, and image recognition, it refers to common-sense know-how ? general intelligence most humans have when in unfamiliar situations. In other words, the ability of an AI to think and reason as a sentient being, even when confronted by unfamiliar data.
